Living Historical Farm

Spring is a great time to visit Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. Wildflowers are blooming, garden crops are growing, baby animals are born and, the farm opens! The Living Historical Farm will open on Sunday, April 12, 2015, until the end of September.  We are looking forward to welcoming new baby lambs to the park family sometime in April and hopefully a new calf early this summer. Visitors and park staff sometimes name the farm animals (remember our calf named Oreo last year?). But keep in mind that the animals are not pets. Here’s what to expect during a visit to the Living Historical Farm: 1.  Walk the Lincoln Boyhood Trail to the Cabin Site Memorial, the site of what is believed to have been the third Lincoln cabin. 2.  The Lincoln Living Historical Farm is a re-created pioneer homestead with a cabin, outbuildings, split rail fences, farm animals, vegetable and herb gardens, and field crops. Rangers in period clothing perform a variety of activities typical of the 1820 era. 3.  Enjoy watching the animals at the farm.  We have a team of horses, milk cow and calf, sheep, lambs and chickens. 4.  Farm staff dressed in period clothing demonstrates daily pioneer activities at the farm. These activities include domestic arts and crafts, animal husbandry, farming, gardening, carding and spinning wool, cooking, wood working, and whatever else needs doing. 5.  Visitors can see people doing the same things the Lincolns did when they lived here. During the course of each day there are a number of things that have to be done, such as chopping firewood, milking the cow, and feeding the horses, chickens, sheep, and cow.   Guest post by Paula Alexander of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial.
