Memorial Day is a federal holiday, of course, originating after the Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers. The holiday is dedicated to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Because Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May, it's tied to more general sentiments about summertime as well. Today, family get-togethers, weekend getaways, and barbeques are also tied to the long weekend. Memorial Day means different things to different people.
