Russia visits Santa's Candy Castle

Posted on August 20, 2010

Our summer intern at the Spencer County Visitors Bureau, Danielle Chase, also works at the local Denny's. This summer she had the opportunity to work with two girls from Russia. Of course she had to show them some of the charming attractions we have in the area! Read on to hear about Danielle's visit to Santa's Candy Castle with her co-workers earlier this week... and Matryoshka Dolls!

--- This weekend, Santa's Candy Castle had special visitors all the way from Russia! Elena and Aleksandra visited the U.S. this summer on a work exchange program. While here, I thought Elena and Aleksandra would love to see Santa's Candy Castle. When we walked inside we were immediately welcomed with the sights, sounds, and smells of Christmas.

The first thing that Elena and Aleksandra noticed was all the unique souvenirs, ornaments, and Christmas decorations. After picking up some Christmas souvenirs to take home to their families, the girls wanted to check out the "North Pole Network" before trying the castle's frozen hot chocolate.Russians_CandyCastle

In the rotunda, the girls were impressed with the variety of Christmas books and even purchased a few on the traditions of Christmas to take back home to their families. While browsing around they discovered that the Candy Castle has a selection of genuine Matryoshka Dolls that are handcrafted in Russia. Elena and Aleksandra explained to me that Russia is known for Matryoshka Dolls and people from all over the world come to Russia to purchase these works of art. Needless to say, they were surprised to find a piece of Russia in the small town of Santa Claus.

As we walked to the car, Elena and Aleksandra informed me that their only regret is not being able to experience the real Christmas holiday in America. However, I told them that in the town of Santa Claus it is Christmas all year long, so they really did get to experience a true American Christmas, plus so much more! --- Danielle Chase, Spencer County Visitors Bureau

Now do we get to go to Russia and visit some of their charming attractions? :)
