Fall Vacation Ideas

Autumn’s crisp air and bright colors inspire many travelers to embrace the outdoors. Cooler weather makes it an ideal time to take a hike or road trip to admire fall foliage. With kids back in school, taking a fall weekend getaway is the perfect treat.

5 Fall Vacation Ideas

1. Take a hike

Getting outside is one of the cheapest forms of entertainment. Take a quiet walk up the wooded Lincoln Boyhood Trail. Visit the gravesite of Abraham Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. And check out the Cabin Site Memorial during a self-guided walking tour. Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial offers a glimpse into the young pioneer life of our 16th president.

2. Have a picnic

Lay down a blanket and unpack the basket of goodies. There’s nothing more whimsical and wonderful than a picnic on a perfect-weather day. If you don’t feel like crafting a full charcuterie board with an array of cheeses, meats, and crackers, pick up some fried chicken from the local grocery store, Holiday Foods. Or, stop by a local winery and choose from an assortment of local cheese, meats, and wine. Don’t forget to bring a good book.

3. Take a trail ride

The wooded surroundings at Santa’s Stables provide a perfect environment with multiple quaint trails. The horses safely walk nose to tail—and younger children can ride on Foxy the Pony.

4. Go fishing

There are lots of reasons to go fishing in the fall. The colors are spectacular and the crowds are fewer. Spend a couple of hours or the entire day relaxing. Grab a fishing rod and head to Lake Lincoln inside Lincoln State Park.

5. Visit a park

Explore outdoor recreation near Santa Claus, Indiana, and Indiana’s Abe Lincoln sites. Area parks have playground equipment, trails to bike or walk, and plenty of practice space for your ultimate frisbee league. It’s the perfect location for kite-flying, quilt-lying, or people-spying (also called “people-watching” when you’re not trying for a rhyme). Grill out with friends and serve up some sporty fun. Gather up enough friends and family and start a kickball game. There are several parks to choose from.
