SUP Q&A

Posted on October 4, 2016

Maybe you never heard of SUP (stand up paddle boarding) before, or maybe you’re not the most coordinated person and are simply hesitant to even try it. Whatever the case may be, we did a Q&A session with the owner of SUP Kentucky to help try and eliminate any fears or preconceived notions you may have about paddle boarding. Here are some commonly asked questions about this activity and their answers: Q: What is stand up paddle boarding? A: SUP is like surfing, but you have a much thicker board and a paddle to help propel you.   Q:  Is it common to fall off the board when learning? Do you have to be a coordinated person to paddle board? A: It's not common to fall off; we usually start kneeling and then stand after a minute or two.  The paddle is there to help us with balance, too, much like the third leg of a tripod.   Q: Will there be lights for the glow float?  A: Yes, all necessary gear is provided for you. Paddle boards are considered a watercraft and life jackets are required. They will be included in the gear provided to you.   Q: Is paddle boarding difficult or a tough workout? A:  After you practice your balance it becomes a workout.  SUP is only a workout if you want it to be, it's mostly a no-strain activity.   Q: Can my child get on the same board with me?  A: Yes, children under 90 lbs. can ride along on the same board with you. SUP with kids   Q: What if I have my own gear? Can I bring it and still enjoy the class? A: Yes, you can bring your own gear but you'll need a state launch permit for your paddle board. You can purchase this $5 permit at Lincoln State Park and it is good for the whole year at any State Park. If you do bring your own gear, you’ll receive a discounted rate for our classes!   Q: Do I need to have experience to paddle board?   A: No, no experience is necessary. We’ll provide you guided instruction and demonstrations throughout the class. We’ll walk through basic gear explanations, how to choose the right gear for you, SUP terminology, how to stand, posture, feet position, strokes and how to move, use of the paddle as a brace, and more. SUP instruction   Q: What should I wear to the class? Do you wear shoes on the paddle board? A: You’re welcome to wear swimming clothes or regular clothes. Shoes or sandals are preferred, just in case you need to walk around or if you do fall in and touch bottom.   Q: Are there any age requirements or weight limits to paddle board?   A: Kids will need adult supervision, but if they can swim, they can paddle. Our boards can hold up to 350 lbs.
